Waikiki Steel Guitar Week
Roberto Alaniz

Roberto Alaniz

Roberto grew up in Southern California.

He developed an interest in the steel guitar at age 12 after hearing "Sleep Walk". His parents then offered to pay for steel guitar lessons at a local music store.

He developed his music skills with his brother who played guitar. Throughout high school and college he and his brother played a variety of music including surf, rock and roll, soul, standards, and country.

He stopped playing the steel guitar at age 22 and it remained untouched for 30 years. His interest was rekindled when he heard Bobby Black play in the San Francisco area.

Now retired, Roberto serves as the Secretary-Treasurer of the Hawaiian Steel Guitar Association (HSGA).
