In its second year of partnering with the Royal Hawaiian Center, the two-day festival will be expanded to a week-long event called Waikiki Steel Guitar Week. This event culminates with the 8th annual Waikiki Steel Guitar Festival on Friday and Saturday. The event will be held at the Royal Hawaiian Center's Royal Grove Stage, with hour-long presentations Monday through Thursday evenings and 3½ hour ho'olaule'a programs on Friday and Saturday. This year's event will be held on July 10-15, 2017, and once again precede the 2017 'Ukulele Festival Hawaii.
The 2017 lineup features popular Hawaiian Steel Guitar masters along with Next Generation steel guitar students of the Ke Kula Mele Hawaii School of Hawaiian Music. This year's featured steel guitar masters and artists will include Alan Akaka and The Islanders, Steve Cheney, Bobby Ingano and The Bobby Ingano Trio, Paul Kim and the Waimanalo Sunset Band, Casey Olsen and The Casey Olsen Trio with special guest Kanoe Miller, Eddie Palama, Greg Sardinha and Po'okela, Wayne Shishido, Alexis Tolentino, and Geronimo "Geri" Valdriz in individual programs of traditional and contemporary Hawaiian music and dance.
Ke Kula Mele Hawaii Next Generation steel guitar students Pono Fernandez (11), Joey Misailidis (12), Malie Lyman (13) and Alexis Tolentino (18), will also perform, accompanied by keiki U-bass players Tai Misailidis and Iosepa Lyman, and by Alan Akaka and Addison Ching on guitars.
Waikiki Steel Guitar Week is free and open to the public. Parking is available at the Royal Hawaiian Center parking garage. Standard parking rates apply with validated parking available with $10 purchase from any center merchant.
